Jewelry for Pets: 5 Ways to Keep Your Furry Friends Close

Written by Anna Currell

It’s no secret that pets can change lives. People adore their furry friends, and for so many reasons; they’re cute, they’re great companions, and there’s even research showing that pets are good for our mental health. A great way to express your love for your best bud (and keep them close even after they’re gone) is to create custom jewelry for pets. Jewelry designers and pet owners alike (and jewelry designers who love their pets!) have found tons of creative ways to honor these lovable creatures. If you’re interested in doing the same for the special dog, cat, rabbit, turtle, hamster, iguana, or teacup pig in your life, here's a little inspiration.

Pendants

Pendants make great jewelry for pets — and also for people! They provide plenty of opportunities for personalization because they’re a blank canvas for creativity. Wear your own pendant on a necklace, put it on a keychain, or add it as a charm on a bracelet. You can choose a basic shape like a circle, oval, or rectangle and include an engraving (we’ll get to engraving ideas later), or go for a pet-inspired shape like a paw print or a bone. If you want to get even more creative, you can customize a pendant in the shape of your sweet pet’s silhouette. One of our favorite ideas is to find matching tag pendants for you and your best pal: give them a pendant tag for their collar to match a diamond studded version for yourself, like this one from our sister brand, Miki & Jane.

Engraved Jewelry or Watch

One of the easiest and most personal ways to customize jewelry is to get it engraved. You can engrave so many different types of jewelry — rings, bracelets, necklaces, watches, etc. — and you can get creative with the message you choose. Your pet’s adoption date, their name, or even an image of their face would turn an already lovely piece of jewelry into something sentimental and special. Jewelers can engrave intricate designs, so you can get as detailed as you like, whether your starting point is a photo of you and your pet or a digital scan of your pet's paw print in ink.

Customized Portrait Jewelry

Brooches, large costume rings, and very big pendants have a wider surface area than most jewelry, so they give the space to get even more detailed. Reach out to a jeweler or artist to make a custom portrait of your pet using enamel, marble, or resin — celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift have jewelry featuring portraits of their beloved pets. (Aniston has a dog named Dolly and Swift has a cat named Meredith.) These portraits can be any style, from art deco to vintage or antique to modern designs; it’s just a matter of finding the right artist to help you realize your vision. We recommend finding the best possible photo of your pet (high quality, great lighting, etc.) so the artist or jeweler has a good reference to work from.

Birthstones

For a more subtle approach, consider birthstone jewelry. Birthstones add a personal touch to a piece of jewelry and they sparkle beautifully. Each birthstone has a different color, from garnets to blue topaz, and they are all imbued with different meanings as well. For example, sapphires indicate faithfulness and peridots represent good luck. Including your pet’s birthstone in your jewelry (or theirs) is a simple but meaningful way to honor your pet. If you’ve been lucky enough to love several furry friends, birthstones are a great way to keep them all close to your heart; you can make a cluster of your pets’ birthstones on a pendant or embed them all on a ring band.

Initial or Nameplate Jewelry

There are all kinds of ways to wear your pet’s name in your jewelry. Hang your pet’s initials from a pair of earrings or use letters to spell out your favorite nickname for them to remind you of your unbreakable bond. A simple nameplate necklace is also a great way to keep a pet close to your heart, or look for a signet ring stamped with their initial. If you want something a little more playful, you can also opt for a beaded letter bracelet or necklace. No matter what you choose, it will be a unique tribute to your animal companion.

Lockets

Make your personalized pet jewelry a little more private with a locket; this way you can keep their memory discreetly tucked away inside a pendant. It’s a personal reminder that you’ll always know is there and that you can show off when the time is right, without shouting it from the rooftops. Choose a special necklace you love and stick a tiny photo of your pet inside your locket so you’re carrying them with you wherever you go.
