Eternity Band

An eternity band is a ring in which gemstones – most often round brilliant diamonds – are set continuously around the full circumference of the band, with no interruption or plain metal section. Unlike a half-eternity band, where stones cover only the front-facing portion, a true eternity band features stones all the way around. The style is a popular choice for anniversary rings, wedding bands, and stacking rings, and is commonly given as a milestone gift to mark significant occasions such as anniversaries or the birth of a child.

Eternity bands are set using several techniques, each with its own character and structural implications. Channel setting houses stones side by side inside a continuous metal rail, giving the band a sleek, uniform look. Pave setting uses tiny beads of raised metal to hold each stone, creating a surface that appears almost entirely covered in diamonds. Prong setting – less common on eternity bands but still used – secures each stone individually with small metal claws. The setting style affects not only how the band looks but how it wears over time and what kinds of repairs are possible. Common metals include white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, and platinum.

Eternity bands present unique challenges for sizing and repair because every millimeter of the shank is occupied by a stone. Resizing requires either removing and resetting stones, inserting or removing a metal section between settings, or sometimes rebuilding a portion of the shank entirely. Because the setting runs uninterrupted around the ring, even small repairs demand careful craftsmanship to preserve the continuous pattern and keep stones aligned and secure. QJR's jewelers work with all eternity band setting styles, assessing each piece individually to determine the safest sizing or repair approach – including whether a sizing bar or ring guard might be a better fit than a full resize.
