How Much Does It Cost to Set a Diamond in a Ring?

The cost to set a diamond in a ring typically ranges from $50 to $250 or more depending on the setting type, metal, and complexity of the work. A standard four-prong solitaire setting on a gold ring runs $50 to $150 at most professional jewelry repair shops. More intricate settings – pave, channel, bezel, tension, or invisible – require additional skill and bench time, so those cost more. At QJR, setting services start at $50 for simple prong work and scale based on the specific job.

Several factors push the price up or down. The number of stones is one of the biggest variables: setting a single center stone is straightforward, while setting an eternity band with 20 to 30 accent stones requires significantly more labor. Metal hardness matters too – setting a diamond into platinum takes more force and more time than gold, because platinum is harder and more resistant to tool work. The condition of the existing setting also plays a role: if the prongs are worn and need to be rebuilt before a stone can be set, that adds to the total. And if the stone itself needs to be removed from an old mounting before being set into a new one, that removal step is typically charged separately.

It is also worth separating the cost of the setting service from the cost of the diamond itself. When customers ask about diamond setting, they usually mean the labor to physically place and secure the stone – that is what these price ranges cover. The cost of the stone is entirely separate. If you are purchasing a new diamond to be set, the stone cost will far exceed the setting fee. If you already own the diamond and just need it set or reset, you are only paying for the labor and any needed mounting or prong work. For loose stones or stones being moved from an old piece into a new one, QJR's team assesses the job in person to confirm the exact setting type, tools required, and time involved before quoting a final price.
