How Long Does Rhodium Plating Last?

Rhodium plating typically lasts 1 to 3 years on rings worn daily, and considerably longer on pieces worn less frequently. The actual lifespan depends on how thick the plating was applied, the base metal underneath, and how much friction and chemical exposure the piece encounters during everyday use.

Rings see the most wear of any jewelry type because they rub against surfaces, other rings, and skin constantly throughout the day. A white gold engagement ring worn on the dominant hand can show wear-through in as little as one year, particularly at high-contact points like the bottom of the shank and the edges of the setting. A pendant or earring, by contrast, might hold its rhodium finish for five years or more since those pieces encounter far less abrasive contact. The chemistry of your skin also plays a role – individuals with higher skin acidity tend to wear through plating faster than others.

The thickness of the rhodium layer matters significantly. Professional plating applied at a reputable jewelry shop is typically deposited at 0.75 to 1.5 microns for a durable finish. Flash plating – a thinner layer sometimes applied at lower-cost facilities – may wear through in months. When having a piece re-plated, asking about the micron thickness is a reasonable question. At QJR, rhodium plating is applied at professional thickness to maximize the wear life of the finish. Re-plating a white gold ring is a routine service that restores the bright white color and can be repeated as many times as needed over the life of the piece.
