How Long Does It Take to Restring Pearls?

Professional pearl restringing typically takes 7 to 10 business days for a standard necklace. Rush service can often be completed in 3 to 5 business days, depending on the jeweler and the complexity of the piece.

The time required depends on several factors: the length of the necklace, the number of pearls, and whether the piece is knotted between each pearl or strung without knots. Traditional knotted restringing – the correct method for fine pearls – takes longer because each pearl is individually knotted between the next, securing them so that if the strand breaks, you lose only one pearl rather than the entire necklace. A standard 16-inch knotted pearl necklace with 35 to 50 pearls typically takes a skilled jeweler 1 to 2 hours of hands-on work. Multi-strand pieces, opera-length necklaces, or pieces with pearl bead mix-ins require additional time.

Clasp condition also affects turnaround. If the original clasp is worn, damaged, or has a broken spring, replacing it while restringing adds some additional time but is strongly recommended. Sending a necklace in for restringing with a failing clasp only to have it break again shortly after is the most common regret customers share. If you are unsure whether your clasp is in good shape, ask the jeweler to inspect it as part of the restringing job.

For mail-in restringing services like QJR, the actual bench time is typically within that 7 to 10 business day window after the piece is received. Add 2 to 5 business days for shipping each way depending on your chosen carrier. QJR offers expedited options for customers who need restringing completed more quickly, and every restrung pearl necklace is inspected, cleaned, and returned in protective packaging. If your pearls are showing fraying silk, visible gaps at the knots, or a limp drape that was not there when new, that strand is overdue for restringing.
