How Long Does It Take to Resize a Ring?

A standard ring resize takes 1 to 5 business days at most jewelers. A simple plain band being sized up or down by one or two sizes is typically the fastest – most bench jewelers can complete this in 1 to 3 days. The work involves cutting the shank, adding or removing metal, soldering the seam, and refinishing the surface.

More complex resizes take longer. Sizing a ring with channel-set or pave stones requires repositioning stones or fabricating new channel sections, which adds time and skill. Eternity bands – where stones run all the way around the shank – often cannot be sized at all, or require significant reconstruction. Sizing more than two sizes in either direction also takes more time, as the proportions of the shank need to be carefully maintained.

Stainless steel resizing is a special case. Most jewelers cannot resize stainless steel at all, but Quick Jewelry Repairs is one of the few that can, due to in-house manufacturing capability. Because of the industrial process involved, stainless steel resizes take up to 10 to 15 business days.

Mail-in ring resizing typically adds 2 to 4 days for shipping on top of the bench time. At QJR, most standard resizes are completed within 5 to 7 business days from receipt, with complex jobs quoted individually based on the specific work required.

Turnaround also depends on how busy the bench is and whether any complications arise – for example, discovering a cracked shank or a loose stone during the resize that needs to be addressed before sizing can proceed.
