Can You Remove a Stone from a Ring?
Yes, a jeweler can remove a stone from a ring in most cases. The process depends on the setting style, and when done by an experienced jeweler with proper tools, neither the ring nor the stone is damaged. At QJR, removing and resetting stones is a routine part of repair and custom work.
Prong-set stones are the easiest to remove. A jeweler uses a prong pusher or stone-setting tool to gently push each prong back away from the stone's girdle, freeing it from the seat. A standard four-prong or six-prong diamond solitaire can be removed in minutes without touching the stone itself. Bezel-set stones require more care: the entire metal collar must be worked open or cut away without marring the stone's surface or distorting the ring shank. A skilled bench jeweler does this with a graver or a very fine saw cut, leaving enough bezel material to re-form when the stone is replaced. Flush and channel-set stones are the most involved – a flush-set stone requires drilling or grinding the metal seat wider to release the stone, while a channel-set row requires opening the channel rails carefully before individual stones can be lifted out. Tension settings, where the stone is held by spring pressure in the metal band, are best handled by the original manufacturer if possible, since reopening the tension requires controlled bending of the shank without cracking it.
Common reasons customers ask for stone removal include re-setting a stone from an heirloom ring into a new mounting, replacing a damaged stone, changing the setting style, resizing a ring that is not safe to size with the stone still in place (platinum or thick-shank jobs where torch heat is a concern), and cleaning a stone that has heavy buildup under the seat. In every case, the stone is cleaned, inspected under magnification for chips or inclusions, and returned or re-set as directed. If you want to keep the original setting, QJR can also return it alongside the loose stone. If the goal is a new ring, we can reset the stone into any replacement mounting you choose.
