How Do You Clean Gold-Plated Jewelry?

Gold-plated jewelry should be cleaned gently to avoid wearing down the finish. In most cases, a soft cloth, mild soap, and water are the safest options.

Because gold plating is a thin surface layer, aggressive cleaning can shorten its life. Abrasive cloths, polishing compounds, jewelry dips, ultrasonic cleaners, and steam cleaners can all damage or remove the plating more quickly than normal wear. Even common household DIY methods can be harsher than they seem.

Gold-plated pieces are best handled with a light touch and cleaned only when needed. It also helps to keep them away from chlorine, cleaning products, lotions, perfumes, and prolonged moisture, all of which can dull the finish or expose the base metal underneath over time.

When gold-plated jewelry starts to look patchy, darkened, or visibly worn at contact points, cleaning usually will not restore the finish. At that stage, replating is typically the better solution.
