Solitaire Setting

A solitaire setting is the most classic and widely recognized ring style in fine jewelry: a single center stone mounted on a plain band, designed so the stone commands every bit of attention. The setting can be executed in many ways, most commonly with four or six prongs that lift the stone off the shank and allow maximum light to pass through, but bezel and tension variations also fall under the solitaire category. What makes a ring a solitaire is the absence of accent stones, not the specific mounting style.

Solitaire settings are used across all ring categories, from engagement rings and anniversary rings to right-hand fashion rings. The style pairs with every gemstone shape: round brilliants, princess cuts, ovals, cushions, pear shapes, and emerald cuts all look at home in a solitaire. Because the center stone carries the full visual weight, solitaire rings place extremely high demands on the mounting itself. A prong that catches on fabric, tips over, or wears thin puts the stone at immediate risk of loss, so the setting quality and regular maintenance matter more here than in pavé or channel styles where multiple stones share the structural load.

At QJR, solitaire ring repairs are among the most common work our bench jewelers handle. Re-tipping or rebuilding worn prongs restores the security of the center stone without altering the clean lines that make the style iconic. We also resize solitaire shanks, replate white gold solitaires with rhodium when the finish dulls, and reset stones that have shifted or loosened over years of wear. Because solitaires rely entirely on the integrity of a small number of prongs, professional inspection every one to two years is the most effective way to prevent stone loss.
