Can You Unsolder Rings?

Yes, rings can be unsoldered by a professional jeweler. The process involves applying heat with a jeweler's torch to the soldered joint until the solder flows and the two pieces separate. The key is knowing exactly how much heat to apply, where to direct it, and how to protect any stones or delicate elements nearby.

The most common reason customers want rings unsoldered is when two bands have been soldered together – typically an engagement ring and wedding band that were joined – and the owner later wants to wear them separately or needs to resize just one of them. Sometimes a ring is soldered to a shank that needs replacement, or a repair from a previous jeweler used too much solder and needs to be redone cleanly.

Unsoldering is a precise task. The challenge is that solder flows at a lower temperature than the metal it joins, so an experienced hand is needed to heat the joint enough to release it without inadvertently softening the surrounding metal or, worse, damaging a stone. Heat-sensitive stones like emeralds, opals, tanzanite, and pearls are particularly vulnerable and must be protected or removed before any torch work. Diamonds and sapphires are more heat-tolerant but still require care. A jeweler will often use heat shields, wet cloths, or stone-removal when the geometry makes it necessary.

Once unsoldered, the ring surfaces will typically need to be cleaned up – the area around the joint may have solder residue or minor surface marks that require filing and polishing. If you are separating two bands that were soldered together, plan for light finishing work on both pieces after separation. At QJR, we handle unsoldering requests regularly and can assess whether your specific rings are good candidates before any work begins.
