How Much Does Watch Battery Replacement Cost?

Watch battery replacement cost depends on several factors: the type of battery your watch uses, the case style, the watch brand, and whether any additional work — like a gasket inspection or pressure test — is needed. Not all batteries are the same, and understanding the differences helps set the right expectations.

Standard Quartz Batteries

Most fashion and dress watches run on a single silver oxide cell — common models include the SR621SW, SR920SW, and SR626SW. These batteries are reliable, typically lasting two to five years depending on the movement. The service involves identifying the correct cell for your specific model, carefully opening the case back without scratching or damaging the finish, installing the battery with proper orientation, and resealing everything correctly.

The case back style matters. Snap-back cases are the most straightforward to service. Screw-back cases require specialized tools and more time. Press-fit cases fall somewhere between. Water-resistant watches should ideally have the gasket inspected and the case pressure-tested after resealing — a compressed or worn gasket that is not replaced can allow moisture into the movement, leading to expensive damage over time.

Dual-Battery Watches

Some watches are equipped with two batteries rather than one. This is common in chronograph movements, watches with multiple complications (like a backlight, alarm, or digital display alongside an analog face), and certain sport or tactical models. Dual-battery watches require both cells to be replaced at the same time — replacing just one leaves you with a watch that will stop working again shortly after. The service is more involved, and the cost reflects the additional battery and the care required to handle a more complex movement.

Solar and Rechargeable Watches

Solar-powered watches — often branded as Eco-Drive (Citizen), Solar (Seiko), or similar — do not use a traditional replaceable battery. Instead, they charge a rechargeable cell or capacitor using light. Over time, even these power cells degrade and lose their ability to hold a charge. When a solar watch stops holding a charge despite regular exposure to light, the capacitor or rechargeable cell typically needs to be replaced. This is a more specialized service than a standard battery swap, and it requires a watchmaker familiar with the brand and movement.

Luxury Watches

High-end quartz watches from brands like Rolex, Omega, Tag Heuer, Cartier, and Longines require extra care during battery service. Improper case opening can damage precision components or void warranties. These watches are best handled by a watchmaker with experience on that specific brand, and the service typically includes a full gasket inspection and case assessment alongside the battery change.

At QJR, watch battery replacement includes identifying the correct battery type for your model, careful case opening, gasket inspection, proper installation, and resealing. We service most standard quartz watches with snap-back and screw-back cases. Send your watch in and we will have it back to you quickly.
