Channel Setting

A channel setting is a stone-mounting style where a row of gemstones is secured side by side between two parallel metal walls called channels. The walls grip the stones on either side, holding them flush with the surface of the band with no individual prongs or metal separating the stones. The result is a smooth, continuous ribbon of sparkle.

Channel settings are common in wedding bands, eternity rings, and anniversary bands. Because no prongs project above the surface, the stones are well protected and the ring sits comfortably against adjacent rings. The style requires precise calibration during setting – each stone must sit at the same depth to maintain the clean, uniform row.

From a repair standpoint, channel settings require specialized skill. If a stone loosens, chips, or falls out, the channel walls must be carefully spread to remove and replace the stone, then re-pressed to secure it without disturbing the adjacent stones. Warning signs of a failing channel setting include a subtle rocking sensation when pressing on a stone, or visible gaps between a stone and the channel wall.
