The Custom-Made Jewelry Experience

Written by Michelle Z

Many people dream of having a custom piece designed for them, but you may be wondering how much custom jewelry costs. While there’s certainly a range of price points, it can also be done affordably for you and yours!

Perhaps you’re looking to repurpose an inherited ring, necklace, or bracelet; maybe you’re looking to design an engagement ring just for you (or your loved one). Maybe you just want to create a necklace or bracelet that is uniquely-yours. Regardless, finding the right jeweler for you can make all the difference.

If you’re wondering how to get started on your custom jewelry journey, check out these tips below:

1. Know Your Basics

Think about which hand and finger you want a ring to be made for, how long each day you plan to wear your piece, and get a sense for what kind of maintenance/cleaning schedule you’re willing to commit to. This is also a great time to decide on what kind of a budget you’re looking to stay within – this will be helpful for the jeweler to know how to create the piece of your dreams without breaking the bank!

Now that you know the basics, get a little more specific. Know what type of piece you want (a necklace, brooch, ring, bracelet, etc.), and know what size you are ahead of time. Think about the length or width of the item, as well. For a necklace, you might ask yourself how long you want it to be and how large of a stone you want to display. For a bracelet, you may want to determine the size of your wrist versus how large you want the bracelet to be.

Know what kind of metal you’re looking for – do you want solid gold, sterling silver, or are you looking for something else entirely? Getting these specifics down ahead of time will save you stress and time in the end.

2. Get Inspired

You can search visual sites like Pinterest, Etsy, Instagram, or even take a peek at some celeb moments to get a sense of:

  1. What style you like
  2. Which designers you like
  3. Which colors and metals you like

You can also check out jewelry blogs, like Gem Gossip or Gemologue, to get a sense of unique pieces, gemstones, and trends. There’s plenty to choose from when it comes to sources for inspiration – check out a few and figure out what you like best.

If you’re still unsure of exactly what you want, don’t sweat it! The custom jewelry creation process doesn’t happen overnight – you’ll have time to discuss your likes and dislikes with a jeweler, and they might have some ideas that you didn’t think of yourself. You can even take to your sketch pad to give a sense of what you’re looking for.

Whether you're designing an engagement ring or a piece you saw on someone else, custom jewelry design might be the best budget-friendly option for you.

3. Find “The One”

Finding the perfect jeweler for you can be a daunting task – don’t let that stop you from finding someone you can trust. Do some thorough Google searches to find independent jewelers you think you might enjoy working with; then, check out the reviews, and ask any questions that might help you make your decision. Finding a jeweler to walk you through the ins and outs can save you time, hassle, and stress – not to mention the right person can make it a wonderful experience.

At Quick Jewelry Repairs, if you already know what you’re looking for, you can fill out this form and for a $10 fee, you’ll receive an estimated quote for custom creation.  Be sure to provide pictures and angles of what you’re looking for in your piece, the base metal and stones you’d like, and any other special requests. If you decide to proceed, a computer-aided design (CAD) will be created for you. This CAD costs $150 and will result in a 3D rendering of your design choices. It will then be sent to you for your review, and, once you give the go-ahead, your jewelry will be designed and finished before it gets sent to you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to ask the questions that are most important to you.

4. Have Fun!

Finding the right jeweler, deciding on your materials, and figuring out the final touches you want to include in your design can be overwhelming so don’t forget to have some fun and enjoy the jewelry design process with your jeweler and/or loved one. Once you get past the initial sets of decisions, sit back and take in the moment – you’re getting a unique piece made just for you; let yourself enjoy it!

Getting a custom piece created for you can be an exciting, albeit daunting process. It’s a great way to connect with someone who can get to know your style, and you can ensure you have a piece that’s all your own. You can also walk away knowing you’ve done your part in supporting a local jeweler – well done, you!
