7 Objects You Didn’t Know You Could Have Engraved

Written by Anna Currell

An engraving can turn a piece of jewelry from something ordinary into something incredibly meaningful. When you think of an engraving, you might imagine a sweet phrase on a wedding band or initials on a watch. But there are tons of unique objects that take the excitement of engraving beyond the realm of jewelry. In this article, we’ll show you seven different things you probably didn’t know you could have engraved — you might have one at home!

#1: Pocket Knives

An engraved pocket knife makes a great gift, because it’s so much more than just a handy tool. For example, if you don’t know what to get your groomsmen to thank them for standing by your side on your big day, a pocket knife is both creative and practical. Make it even more personal and engrave each groomsman’s name, the wedding date, or even a funny inside joke. The best places to engrave a knife are on the handle (if it’s metal) or on the blade itself.

#2: Pens

If you want to get someone a meaningful gift for a graduation or a big job promotion, a personalized pen could be the way to go. A beautiful metal fountain pen symbolizes potential — think of all the things they’ll write, create, or sign with it. Getting an engraving turns a simple pen into more than just a writing utensil. Engrave their name, graduation date, new company’s logo, or an inside joke that will make them smile when they reach for their pen. A metal pen is easy to engrave and makes a special, commemorative present.

#3: Guns

Have a firearm that you want to make more personal? Believe it or not, you might be able to get it engraved. While some parts of a gun are engravable, there are a lot of parts that can’t be engraved without interfering with its functionality. Due to safety concerns and mailing restrictions, you’ll have to take your gun to a jeweler in person for engraving rather than sending it to the shop for a repair. Ask your jeweler if you have any questions about engraving your gun, and call ahead of time to make sure they can take on the task.

#4: Eyeglasses

Do you wear eyeglasses? If so, you’ve got an opportunity to make them even more unique to you. The temples and inner rims of metal eyeglasses are perfect subtle areas to engrave initials or short messages. Avoid lens surfaces and functional parts of the glasses. It’s a good idea to consult your jeweler to ensure that the engraving you want will fit and will work well with your frame style and won’t interfere with your vision.

#5: Metal Cups

For hikers, campers, and people who are always on the go, a metal cup can make a great gift. It can even sit on your desk to hold pens or in your bathroom to hold your toothbrush. Whatever you do with your metal cup, getting it engraved makes it even more personal. You can etch an entire image onto the side or get creative with a decorative design around the perimeter of the cup. With such a large surface area, there’s endless potential for engraving this everyday object. If you have a specific metal cup in mind that incorporates other materials like plastic, enamel, or glass, speak to your jeweler to make sure they can perform the engraving safely without damaging the cup.

#6: Trophies & Awards

And the Oscar goes to… an engraved award! Whether you’re in charge of your office’s Employee of the Month plaques, or your recreational basketball team is celebrating the end of a season, getting a trophy or award engraved is a great way to acknowledge hard work. If your trophy, award, or plaque is made of metal, it should be easy to have a jeweler engrave any message into it! Be sure to ask your jeweler if it’s possible to have the item (or the specific spot) engraved.

#7: Kaleidoscopes

Did you know that kaleidoscopes can be more than just whimsical kids’ toys? You might recall the plastic kind you had as a kid, but they also come in high-end artistic metal versions. Kaleidoscopes can be a great gift for the person in your life that loves games and puzzles, or has funky taste but is impossible to shop for. The shaft on the outside of the kaleidoscope has a lot of surface area that makes it easy to engrave; find an inspirational quote about seeing life differently, or a romantic one about how the person you love brings color into your world.
