Palladium

Palladium is a rare, naturally white precious metal belonging to the platinum group of elements. It shares many characteristics with platinum, including its bright silvery-white color, impressive resistance to tarnish, and excellent durability, but it is significantly lighter and typically more affordable. In fine jewelry, palladium is valued for its hypoallergenic properties, making it a preferred choice for people with metal sensitivities, and for its ability to hold a high polish without the need for rhodium plating.

Palladium appears most often in engagement rings, wedding bands, and other fine jewelry pieces where a pure white metal look is desired without the weight or cost of platinum. It is also used in white gold alloys, particularly in higher-karat pieces, where palladium replaces nickel as the whitening agent for a more skin-friendly and naturally lustrous result. Palladium jewelry is typically stamped “950Pd” or “500Pd” to indicate its purity, similar to how gold is stamped with karat markings.

From a repair standpoint, palladium presents some unique considerations. It work-hardens more quickly than gold, which means resizing or reshaping palladium rings requires the hands of an experienced jeweler using the correct tools and techniques. Improper handling can cause surface cracking or stress fractures. At QJR, our jewelers are equipped to handle palladium ring reshaping, resizing, and reconditioning, restoring palladium pieces to their original form without compromising the metal's integrity.
