Is Rhodium Plating Safe?

Yes, rhodium plating is safe. Rhodium is a platinum-group metal that is hypoallergenic, non-reactive, and has no known toxicity to humans. It does not oxidize, does not leach into skin, and does not react with sweat, lotion, or body oils. For this reason, rhodium plating is widely used in fine jewelry as a protective finish, and it is one of the best options for people who experience skin reactions from direct contact with nickel or other base metals in white gold alloys.

The plating process itself uses an electroplating bath containing a rhodium solution. Once the process is complete and the piece is rinsed and dried, no active chemicals remain on the surface. The finished plating layer is inert and stable under normal wearing conditions. You will not experience any reaction from the rhodium layer itself, though a very thin plating that wears through to the underlying metal could expose you to whatever alloy sits beneath, which may include nickel in some white gold compositions. If you have known nickel sensitivity, this is worth keeping in mind: fresh rhodium plating eliminates the exposure, but worn plating does not.

There is no health reason to avoid rhodium plating. The concerns some people have typically trace back to misinformation online conflating rhodium with other metals or processes. In professional jewelry care, rhodium is considered one of the safest and most durable finishes available. A properly applied rhodium plating at the correct micron thickness, using quality rhodium solution and proper rinsing, leaves a surface that is harder than gold, more scratch-resistant than platinum, and completely inert against skin.

If you have a white gold ring that has yellowed or if the finish is worn unevenly, QJR's rhodium plating service will restore the bright white finish and put a fresh hypoallergenic barrier between the alloy and your skin. Most pieces are returned the same day or next day.
